Through the Miracle League of Greater New Orleans, many area children with disabilities will get their first opportunity to play organized sports and reap the emotional and physical benefits of being part of an athletic team. Many children with minor disabilities can join existing baseball and soccer leagues, but according to U.S. Census estimates, there are 2,400 children living in the greater New Orleans area who could only participate on a Miracle Field due to a moderate to severe disability. The Miracle Field is the key component of the Miracle League that provides a child with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball and soccer. The special design of the Miracle Field can accommodate several moderate to severe disabilities: orthopedic or mobility challenges (including spinal cord injuries); blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing; autism and related disabilities; Asperger Syndrome; spina bifida; down syndrome; chronic illness or health impairment (respiratory diseases, cancer, etc.); developmental delays; and amputees.
